Certification Process

As from July 19 2017, tools that support XES can be certified. This certification means that the tool meets certain quality requirements related to the XES Standard.

Tools analyzing event logs

Certification of a tool that can analyzes (and possibly also produces) XES event logs involves four simple steps:

  1. The vendor of the tool creates a report that (1) states which certification levels are requested by the vendor and (2) shows that the tool indeed supports these levels. A template for the report is available as PDF (PDF, 1,364 KB) and as Word file (DOCX, 3,497 KB). In this template, the TODOs need to be filled in by the vendor. To test the import of a tool, a set of XES logs (ZIP archive, 53,404 KB) is available. The tool should not crash when importing the real-life logs, and should show that the attributes are imported correctly for the artificial logs
  2. The vendor contacts a representative of the XES WG to demonstrate the results. Preferably, this is though a live demo, but a screencast is also acceptable.
  3. If the XES Working Group agrees with the desired certification levels, the XES WG will approve the corresponding Certificate within two weeks.
  4. The XES Working Group representative publishes the Certificate on the website of the IEEE Task Force on Process Mining.

Tools producing event logs

Certification of a tool that produces XES event logs involves roughly the same steps:

  1. The vendor of the tool creates a report that (1) states which certification levels are requested by the vendor and (2) shows that the tool indeed supports these levels. A template for the report is available as PDF (PDF, 1,364 KB) and as Word file (DOCX, 3,497 KB). In this template, the TODOs need to be filled in by the vendor, where the part concerning the import of the event logs can be omitted.
For these tools, the following criteria are used for the certification:
  • A1: The exported logs use the Concept extension and contain "concept:name" as a global event attribute.
  • B1: The exported logs use the Concept, the Lifecycle, and the Time extensions, and contain "concept:name", "lifecycle:transition", and "time:timestamp" as global event attributes.
  • C1: The exported logs use the Concept and the Organizational extensions, and contain "concept:name"and "org:resource" as global event attributes.
  • D1: The exported logs use only standard extensions and contain only attributes from these standard extensions.
  • X1: The exported logs use non-standard extensions and/or contain attributes not covered by any used extension.
  • A2-X2: Like A1-X1, but the exported logs now also contain classifiers that contain only (but necessarily all) the mentioned attributes.
